Loser!

I think the only real way to see a movie is by yourself. When you watch with someone else, it becomes an uneven shared experience and less about you forming a relationship with the story as much as it is you trying to forge commonalities both with the movie and your friend, or whoever. Unless of course you’re watching Scary Movie 26. Then it doesn’t matter either way. Actually it does. Don’t watch Scary Movie 26 by yourself. That’s just sad

Am I a giant nerd for going to see a movie alone? This is a first…

Well, I do it, but that’s probably a good indication that it’s strange.

I find that seeing a movie by yourself is good for a number of reasons:

  1. You don’t have to worry about who pays (ie. it’s not a date)
  2. Popcorn and a drink for one is cheaper (I sound tightarse here, but yeah I am one)
  3. You don’t have someone saying things like “Ooh, he’s behind that tree, look!” (The annoying friend who always provides a running commentary) or “I didn’t think this movie would have sex in it… maybe we should have seen something else” (your mum…well, my mum)
  4. If you are by yourself, you are not with a child (or boyfriend slash husband) who needs to go to the toilet at least twice during the film.
  5. It’s YOU time.
  6. You can cry without your sister mocking you. (I cry a lot in films)
  7. If you snort with laughter, there’s not someone you know sitting next to you. (Although there could be someone in the row in front)
  8. When you get home, you can recommend it to everyone and say I really enjoyed it. Not I wish you hadn’t been so annoying thru the entire thing.
  9. Etc, etc, there’s lots of things great about seeing a movie alone, but mine is that it’s something to do for you not for anyone else.
